DureX Incorporation

Custom HVAC Enclosures And Cabinets

Durex Inc. designs and fabricates custom sheet metal enclosures and cabinets for HVAC systems, built to your exact specifications, from a single prototype to full production runs. We serve HVAC OEMs, controls companies, and building system integrators who need precision-fabricated enclosures that fit their equipment layout without compromise.

Every enclosure is manufactured in-house at our New Jersey facility, where our fabrication and assembly teams work under one roof, giving you tighter tolerances, faster lead times, and a single point of contact from raw sheet metal to finished cabinet. If your HVAC application needs a custom housing, we build it.

Types of HVAC Enclosures We Build

Not every HVAC application fits a stock enclosure. Durex fabricates custom sheet metal housings for the full range of HVAC system components, built to your dimensions, your cutout specs, and your environment.

  • HVAC Control Panel Enclosures: Indoor and outdoor-rated enclosures for HVAC control systems, built to NEMA 3R, 4, or 4X depending on installation requirements.
  • Electrical Control Cabinets for Rooftop and Split Systems: Weatherproof cabinets designed for rooftop condensing units, air handlers, and split system applications where exposure to the elements is a constant factor.
  • Custom Junction Boxes and Disconnect Enclosures: Fabricated to house disconnect switches, terminal blocks, and field wiring connections in HVAC electrical systems.
  • Equipment Housings and Protective Covers: Custom sheet metal covers and housings for compressors, motors, valves, and other HVAC components requiring mechanical protection.
  • Ductwork Transitions and Custom Sheet Metal Duct Components: Offsets, transitions, and specialty duct fittings fabricated to your layout when standard fittings will not work.

Materials and Finishes

Durex works with a full range of sheet metal materials selected to match your enclosure’s environment, load requirements, and finish specifications.

  • Galvanized Steel: The standard choice for outdoor HVAC enclosures. Corrosion-resistant coating makes it well-suited for rooftop and exterior installations.
  • Stainless Steel (304 and 316): Specified for corrosive environments, coastal installations, and applications where long-term surface integrity is critical. 316 offers enhanced resistance to chlorides and salt air.
  • Aluminum: Lightweight and naturally corrosion-resistant. A practical choice where weight is a factor or where additional coating is not desired.
  • Cold Rolled Steel with Powder Coat Finish: The preferred option for indoor control panels and cabinets where a clean, durable finish is required.

Finish options include powder coat, paint, anodize, and raw mill finish depending on material and application.

NEMA Ratings

For HVAC engineers and controls specifiers, NEMA rating is often the first filter applied when sourcing an enclosure. Durex fabricates enclosures to meet the NEMA ratings most commonly required in HVAC applications.

  • NEMA 3R: Rain-tight and suitable for outdoor use. Protects against falling rain, sleet, and external ice formation. The most common rating for rooftop HVAC electrical enclosures.
  • NEMA 4: Watertight and dust-tight. Protects against windblown dust, rain, splashing water, and hose-directed water. Specified for washdown environments and exposed installations.
  • NEMA 4X: All the protection of NEMA 4, plus corrosion resistance. Required for coastal environments, chemical exposure areas, and stainless steel enclosure applications.

If your project calls for a specific NEMA rating, we build to that spec. Not sure which rating applies? Our team can help you determine the right enclosure classification based on your installation conditions.

Customization Options

Standard enclosures rarely fit a custom HVAC application cleanly. Durex builds every enclosure to the dimensions, features, and finish your project requires, with no adapting around a stock box.

  • Custom Dimensions: Built to fit any equipment layout or mounting space, regardless of how unusual the footprint.
  • Knockouts, Gland Plates, and Cutouts: Located to your exact specification for conduit entry, cable glands, and field wiring access.
  • Door and Panel Configurations: Hinged doors, removable panels, and lift-off covers available depending on access requirements.
  • Internal Mounting Features: Mounting brackets, back panels, and DIN rail provisions installed per your component layout.
  • Sub-Panels and Component Mounting: Internal sub-panels fabricated and fitted for organized component mounting inside the enclosure.
  • Finish Options: Powder coat, paint, anodize, or raw mill finish to match your project requirements.

Drawings and specifications are accepted in all standard formats. Our engineering team reviews each submission and flags any fabrication considerations before production begins.

In-House Enclosure Fabrication and Assembly

For HVAC controls customers, one of the most time-consuming parts of a project is coordinating between an enclosure supplier and an assembly house. Durex eliminates that entirely.

We fabricate the enclosure and populate it, including wiring, terminal blocks, DIN rails, breakers, contactors, and control components, all under one roof at our New Jersey facility.

Our UL-listed panel shop handles the electrical build, and our sheet metal team handles the box. You get a finished, tested assembly from a single vendor, on a single purchase order, with one point of contact managing the entire scope.

For HVAC OEMs and system integrators running repeat programs, this model significantly reduces lead time, sourcing complexity, and the quality risks that come with splitting the work across multiple suppliers. Our electro-mechanical assembly capabilities cover the full scope of what goes inside the box.

Industries and Applications

Custom HVAC enclosures from Durex are specified across a wide range of commercial, industrial, and institutional applications.

  • HVAC OEMs and System Integrators: Production enclosures and populated panel assemblies built to repeat specifications.
  • Commercial Building Automation: Control panel enclosures for BAS and DDC systems managing HVAC across multi-zone commercial facilities.
  • Industrial HVAC and Process Cooling: Heavy-duty enclosures for demanding environments where standard ratings and materials are not sufficient.
  • Data Center Cooling Systems: Precision enclosures for CRAC units, cooling towers, and chiller plant control systems.
  • Municipal and Government Facilities: Enclosures built to specification for public buildings, schools, and infrastructure projects with strict compliance requirements.

Durex serves customers across New Jersey and the surrounding region. See the full range of industries we support on our sheet metal fabrication page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What NEMA rating can you build to?

Durex fabricates HVAC enclosures to NEMA 3R, 4, and 4X. If your application requires a specific rating, share your installation conditions and we will confirm the right classification.

Can you build and wire the enclosure?

Yes. Our in-house UL-listed panel shop can fabricate the enclosure and complete the full electrical assembly, including wiring, terminations, and component population, as a single turnkey deliverable.

What is your minimum order for custom enclosures?

We work with customers on both prototype and production quantities. Contact us to discuss your program volume and we will outline the best approach for your project.

Do you offer stainless steel HVAC enclosures?

Yes. We fabricate in 304 and 316 stainless steel for corrosive environments, coastal installations, and applications requiring NEMA 4X protection.
